I wrote a long essay for school and the teacher says it's too long and that I have to write a new, shorter one. I was just like:
Usually teachers tell you to write longer things.

It hasn't happened to me, but it happened to my best friend in college a lot. We'd get an assignment for 10 pages or something, then she would write like 19 pages.
It was frequently frowned upon.

Last week, my AP Language teacher made me write a paper all over again from scratch. It was too long according to her. She also told me that I write too much like an adult.

Really? Oh the education system these days. And the fact that you live in Florida might have something to do with it...

You have a good teacher. It's easy to ramble for pages; it takes a lot more skill to make your argument cleanly and concisely.

I had way more trouble keeping my college essays down to a maximum limit, rather than meeting a minimum requirement.

Too long is a valid criticism - brevity is a lost art.

1) Longer essays are not always better. Being able to make a point concisely is an important skill. Many long essays are unfocused, especially when the prompt is usually written with the length of essay in mind. 2) Essays are tasks. Tasks have objectives. The sooner you get your head around the idea that limits are part of the task, the better. 3) Grading a stack of over-length essays is a huge time sink for instructors. There is one of them, and many of you (students). Think of what would happen if everyone ignored the limits.

Thanks, Florida. She tells me that I'm too mature for my age and that my fancy vocabulary is unnecessary. I'm actually doing AP Language homework right now.

It was 1154 words with the bare minimum of 1000 words. It wasn't even the longest in the class.

I had papers in college rejected for being 20 words above the limit. It's there for a reason - I guarantee you could have trimmed at least 150 words from that without losing anything important.

I did. It was a topic that really got me going I think it was on ebola or some disease maby rabies IDK but it was supposed to be 3 paragraphs I wrote 3 pages.

It's a limit for the minimum amount of words. All I did was delete 2 sentences and rewrite a couple of other ones. I still got a 100.

Ha! Not once did that ever happen to me, mine were usually the absolute minimum. Sometimes if it was a 10 page assignment, I'd only have one word on the tenth page because the professor never said "ten full pages."

As an engineering student, my tutors want everything to be a concise report of what has been learned or observed so yes all the time. If it has more words than are needed to convey a point or data, it'll be asked to be cut down. I've heard similar things are expected of med students since people just want a run down of what's going on and nothing more.

The point is that you should be concise.
No one likes to read rambling.

I learned that lesson the hard way. I currently make my essays concise and get straight to the point with little or no excess. You learn from your mistakes.

it is good to "dumb down" writings occasionally. You should always write with your target audience in mind

It's not really that fancy. I write with the same words that I speak with. She encourages said vocabulary. When I use it, it's bad, but when others use it, it's good. Words such as atrocious and detriment.

If the teacher doesn't feel like reading that much, he or she should just scan the first page and give you an "A." Simple as that.

I got thrown out of religion class for playing a gameboy once. Same teacher also let me play The Commitments movie because it was about Catholics in Ireland. Lasted about half an hour before she pulled it (and sent me to the office). Dumb as a post. Hot with huge.... but dumb.
In case you haven't already figured it out, no is my answer to the question.
